Email marketing can be one of the most effective ways to drive traffic and sales. But, as any marketer knows, an email is only truly successful if recipients take the action you’re asking them to. And that’s where a clear, compelling call to action (CTA) can help.
A CTA is a short, clear statement that tells the reader what action you’d like them to take after reading your email. Whether it’s clicking to book an appointment, visiting your website, using a promo, or signing up to receive regular updates, your email is only really complete if recipients do what they ask them to.
The most common form of a CTA is a button. However, a call to action can also be a hyperlink or image that leads directly to the desired action. The most important thing is that it is clear and compelling, as well as clearly linked to the content of your email.
In a perfect world, your email CTA would stand out from the rest of your email with unique design and formatting. But, as most of us know, this is not always possible, especially when your audience opens your email on their phone. The good news is that there are some simple, easy-to-follow tips you can follow to make your email CTAs as eye-catching and effective as possible.
The First Rule: Keep It Short
If you want your email subscribers to click on your CTA, it needs to be short and snappy. Longer button text can be difficult to read on mobile devices and will likely result in fewer clicks than a shorter, more concise button.
Try to limit your button text to two to four words, if possible. This will ensure that your email is easily readable on mobile devices and will be easy for the average person to understand.
Using powerful verbs like ‘book’, “order”, ‘get started', or ‘order now’ can increase your conversion rates. These strong, direct verbs create a sense of urgency that prompts your readers to take action.
Another great way to increase your clicks is to personalize your email CTA. By using the subscriber’s name, you can give a more personal touch to your message and show that you care about your subscribers.
It’s also a good idea to include a deadline with your email CTA. This will encourage your subscribers to act quickly and eliminate any confusion about what they should do next. Finally, make sure your primary email CTA stands out from other design elements in the email by making it a different color from your other design components. If you need to add additional CTAs, consider making them simple buttons to prevent any competition with your primary email CTA. A healthy dose of white space surrounding your buttons will also help them pop and be more eye-catching.
